Help with the cost of neutering your cat

Vet prices · 2 November 2026 · 2 min read

A cat spay typically costs £155 and a castration £110 at the vets we track, but owners on a low income can often get help from Cats Protection.

With rescue centres full of cats, charities are asking owners to get their cats neutered. The cost puts some people off. We checked the published prices of more than 800 vets across the South West, Hampshire and London, and the price you pay depends a lot on where you go.

Help from Cats Protection

Cats Protection gives neutering vouchers through its local teams. The voucher pays part of the bill, and you pay the vet any difference on the day of the operation.

You can usually get one if you receive a means tested benefit such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit or income based Jobseeker's Allowance, or if your household earns less than £25,000 a year before tax. Some benefits do not count, including Personal Independence Payment and Child Benefit. Local teams decide in the end, and you may be asked for proof.

The charity used to run one national scheme. Since 2025 help comes from local teams instead, so what is on offer, and how much a voucher is worth, depends on where you live. Vouchers are only valid in the year printed on them.

Find your local Cats Protection team by putting your postcode into the charity's website, then ask them about neutering vouchers.
